What is e-invocing?
Basics of Electronic Invoicing
- E-invoicing means that invoices are no longer sent as traditional PDFs or paper documents. Instead, they are issued, transmitted and received in a structured, electronic format.
- Invoice formats: XRechnung (XML) and ZUGFeRD (PDF with embedded XML). These modern invoice formats enable automatic and electronic processing, which leads to a significant increase in efficiency.
- From January 1, 2025, all companies must be able to accept, process and archive the new electronic invoice for domestic B2B sales.
- Exceptions: End consumers, low-value invoices up to €250 and tax-free deliveries (§ 4 no. 8-29 UStG) are not affected by the new requirements for electronic invoicing.
- Background: With the introduction of e-invoicing, Germany is following the example of other EU countries as part of the ViDA initiative.
